Riad Ismat is a prolific playwright, screenplay writer, director and critic from Syria. He has to his credit over 15 plays, 7 books of fiction and many books of criticism published in four Arabic countries. He has also written several television series. He directed extensively for Damascus National Theater Company and the Academy of Dramatic Arts. He served as Syria’s ambassador to Pakistan and Qatar; then, he was appointed Minister of Culture until he stepped down in 2012 and moved to live in the USA. He teaches at Northwestern University.
