Wisconsin has a chance to get it right, to establish an Independent Redistricting Commission (IRC) that ends gerrymandering and protects our multiracial democracy. As midterms season picks up here in Wisconsin, we’re focusing in and making our demands heard. It’s time for accountability in Wisconsin. We demand legislators pass an IRC—this is about voters, not parties.
We must be visible. Right now, in Southern states, power-hungry, anti-democratic politicians are gerrymandering to take votes away from Black and brown voters. We must protect our vote here in Wisconsin, and an IRC is the way to do so. What we’re seeing at the national level makes our work harder, but it doesn’t make it impossible. We were built for these fights.
Rain or shine, our featured speaker will be Debra Cronmiller, the Executive Director of the League of Women Voters of Wisconsin and charter member of the Fair Maps Coalition. We will also hear from elected state representatives (so far, Sen. Spreitzer and Rep. Roe, but expecting others). Please join us for this important demonstration of solidarity to end gerrymandering our electoral maps—voters must pick their legislators as opposed to representatives picking and choosing their constituents.
