Action Steps

From Sept 17 Program

Working Together When COVID-19 and Racial Disparities Meet

We partnered with the Diversity Action Team of Rock County for the September 17 program titled Working Together When COVID-19 and Racial Disparities Meet.

This program was an excellent update on the racial disparities in Rock County, what YWCA Rock County and Health Net are doing to address these challenges and what we as individuals, families, and businesses can do.

  1. Request weekly updates on racial disparities and COVID-19. Contact our speaker at [email protected]. Request that the Health Department post this info weekly.
  2. Donate to the Immigrant Relief Fund, helping essential workers, people trying to renew the Green Cards, people waiting for Citizenship status, etc. Contact Ellen Joyce <[email protected]> or YWCA Rock County Facebook page for Immigrant go fund me information to donate. Funds are available for Rock County immigrants.
  3. Ian Hedges, Health Net, recommended reading Medical Apartheid by Harriet A. Washington.
  4. Be sure your clinic or hospital request feedback from patients of color to eliminate distrust that has been created by their medical experiences.
  5. Check in with friends and co-workers of color when negative events happen. Be a true ally by listening, learning, and supporting.
  6. Call, write, contact your County Board and City Council members, State and Federal Representatives to share your voice. Explain the systemic changes (health, housing, education, policing, etc.) that you feel need to be seriously addressed.
  7. Live and share the words of John Lewis, “When you see something that is not right, not fair, not just, you have to speak up, you have to say something, you have to do something.”
  8. Value each other’s complexities and find opportunities to learn and work together!!

A collaboration of local non-profits are once again partnering to present a virtual discussion focused on social justice and current events.

Working Together When COVID-19 and Racial Disparities Meet

Thursday, September 17   6:30-7:30 p.m.     via Zoom

The conversation, moderated by Beloit College Assistant Professor Ron Watson, will highlight how the racial disparities that have always existed in healthcare, employment, education and childcare have been magnified by the current pandemic.

Rock County Health Department, HealthNet of Rock County, Inc., YWCA of Rock County and Community Action, Inc. Rock and Walworth Counties will share the updates and actions that their organizations have taken in response to old and new challenges. Participants will hear from a Latinx mom who is living the reality that these disparities create.  They will also learn how individuals, families and organizations can make lasting changes.

The discussion is presented by Diversity Action Team of Rock County, the YWCA of Rock County, Community Action, Inc. of Rock and Walworth Counties, the Beloit NAACP Branch #3251 and UW-Madison, Division of Extension Rock County and Hedberg Public Library.
